Preparing Appliances

Need some tips for preparing your appliances for moving day? When you are looking to buy a home, sometimes people will leave their appliances behind for the next owner. For many, it’s just easier to buy new items than haul away the older ones. However, for people who have newer equipment, leaving these appliances can be less than ideal. Fortunately, you can take your appliances with you. All you need is a little preparation!

Disconnect and Secure

First of all, let’s talk about the steps that all large appliances need to go through. Regardless if you are moving an oven, refrigerator, or washer/dryer, all of them will need to be disconnected before moving. Moving companies will not move items that are hard-wired or connected to gas. That is why you need to disconnect everything before they can be moved.

After everything is unplugged, you need to all the cords. After all, loose cords can get damaged or tangled during a move. The best way to protect these cords is by wrapping them in tape and taping them to the appliance itself. In addition, you should secure the doors, knobs, and handles with tape and packaging. However, these are just the basics. Each appliance needs its own preparation as well.

Stove

When it comes to preparing your stove for a move, the steps will depend on the type of stove you have. If you have an electric stove, things are a lot simpler. Outside of unplugging the stove, you will need to check if the electrical requirements can be met. When it comes to gas stoves, there are a few extra steps. You need to turn off the gas before disconnecting the gas stove. Regardless of the stove type that you have, you need to clean the appliance inside and out. You also need to remove the racks from the stove or secure them inside.

Refrigerator

When it comes to preparing this appliance, you need to defrost your refrigerator. This will prevent leaks while it is moved. About 24 hours before moving day, you need to unplug the refrigerator to allow time for temperature adjustments and prevent leaks from the freezer. You will also need to disconnect and drain the waterline connected to the appliance. After everything is detached, you need to clean out the shelves. In addition, you should wash and dry the inside of the refrigerator to prevent mold and mildew from forming.

Washer/Dryer

When it comes to preparing appliances like a washer and dryer, you need to actually use a few items that came with the appliances. This includes a part to help secure the drums. If you do not have these items, you cannot move your washer or dryer. Prior to your move, you need to get these items and secure these parts so they can be moved. Once you have all the parts, you can drain the washer and disconnect the hot and cold hoses.
