Helpful and Safety Tips for Your Move
|
- Preparing Household Items: To guard your household goods against damage that could be caused by fire, explosions or leakage in the moving van:
- Dispose of flammable items like fireworks, cleaning fluids, matches, acids, chemistry sets, aerosol cans, ammunition etc.
- Drain fuel from power mowers or other machinery. Discard partial cans of oil, paint, paint thinners or any substances that my leak.
- Carefully tape and place into individual waterproof bags any jars of liquids that must be taken with you. Do the same with all prescription medications and consumables.
- Propane tanks need to be purged and sealed by your local dealer. Purge and discard any non-refillable tanks of flammable gases.
- Have your throw rugs or draperies cleaned prior to your move. Once returned, leave them wrapped in the cleaners plastic for protection.
Exercise Caution:
- Get written appraisals of antique or other valuable furniture or clocks.
- Avoid waxing or oiling wood or antiques or other wood furniture prior to moving. Some furniture products may soften wood making it vulnerable to imprinting from furniture pads.
- Professional outside services may be required prior to moving items like hot tubs, large screen television components or even exercise equipment. Talk to us about pre-move or post-move servicing of washers or dryers, grandfather clocks, satellite dishes, waterbeds or anything else of concern.
- You may find it more efficient to replace an outdoor antenna than to move an exiting antenna.
Helpful Hints:
- Completely defrost and thoroughly dry refrigerators before moving. All doors should be left open for air drying several hours after hand drying. All refrigerator pans, drawers or other removable parts should be taken out and wrapped separately. Refrigerator motors may need to be bolted down prior to moving. The motor will then also need to be unbolted prior to plugging it in at your new location. Please talk to us, and we can advise you regarding these services.
- Stoves must be unhooked prior to moving. Be sure that your gas lines are turned off and properly capped. If you have an electric range with loose coils, they must be removed along with griddles, fryers or other removable parts. These items need to be packed separately.
- Air conditioners to be moved should be serviced by an authorized professional since some sealed units may need to be bolted down. Always consult your owners manual prior to moving.
- Consult your owners manual before moving electric or gas dryers. Some units may need professional service prior to moving.
- All freezers (chest or upright) must be defrosted and dried prior to moving. We cannot move your freezer and assure the contents will arrive unthawed and safe for use. Please make prior arrangements for using or storing perishable items prior to your move.
- Sewing machines do not require special handling for local moves. A long distance move of a your sewing machine will be handled by stuffing old newspaper in and around the machine to prevent movement.
- Washing machines should be serviced by a professional. The motor should be checked and secured properly and tumblers need to be properly locked in place.
